Attempted Carjacking - Bayou L'Ourse - Sunday, January 17, 2010
Sheriff Mike Waguespack reports that on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at approximately 11:12AM, APSO dispatchers began receiving 911 calls concerning a shooting in the 100 block of Aristile Road in Bayou L'ourse.

Upon arriving at the location Deputies contacted a 39 year old man who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his hand. The man reported that earlier that morning he and his 12-year-old daughter went shopping at the Wal Mart store in Bayou Vista. Upon returning home he parked in the front of his apartment on Aristile Road. As the man was about to exit his vehicle, a dark skinned man, wearing a dark hooded jacket and a bandana over his face approached the driver's side and ordered him to get out of the car. The suspect was armed with a handgun and aimed it in the direction of the man and his daughter. When the man did not exit the car fast enough the suspect repeated the order and struck the car window with the pistol, shattering the glass. At this time the man retrieved a handgun from the area of the driver's seat and exited. A gun battle ensued. The suspect then fled to a champagne colored pickup truck that was waiting on the roadway and entered the passenger door. The driver of the truck sped away on Hwy 662, toward Gibson. An APSO Deputy's son who was traveling on Hwy 662 observed the gun battle and pursued the suspects' truck. The truck continued to Hwy 182 and was last seen in the Gibson area. The male victim sustained a gunshot to his hand during the incident and was transported to an area hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service. The victim's daughter sustained a small laceration to her face from the flying window glass. Over twenty rounds were exchanged during the incident.

While deputies were on the crime scene they were informed that the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office was investigating an attempted carjacking that occurred approximately thirty minutes earlier in the Amelia area. The victim in the Amelia incident gave a similar description of the suspects and their vehicle. This victim also reported that shots were fired during the attempted carjacking.

A couple of hours later two hunters discovered the suspects' truck parked on Deadwood Road in Gibson. Upon arrival at the location Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office deputies discovered that someone had attempted to set the truck on fire. They also discovered a moderate amount of blood in the area of the passenger's seat of the vehicle. A computer inquiry revealed that he truck was registered to an individual who resides in the Gibson area.

The gunman was described as a Mexican or African American man in his twenties approximately 5'7 with a thin build. Witnesses reported that the driver may have been a white male but no clear description was given.

This matter remains under investigation.
