Evidence Room Investigation - Friday, April 9, 2010
While preparing a narcotics case for trial late last week it was discovered that the some of the narcotics associated with a distribution case may have been mishandled by an Assumption Parish Sheriff Evidence Custodian. Because this Deputy is supervised by my Internal Affairs Investigator, I immediately contacted Sheriff Craig Webre and asked that his Internal Affairs Division lead and independent internal investigation into this matter. After his initial investigation was begun, the Evidence Custodian was placed on Administrative Leave.

In the interim, I am in the process of engaging a Third Party Private Vendor to conduct a complete audit of all evidence on hand and report any and all findings within 30 days of completion of its audit. As well, I have been in contact with Louisiana State Police Detectives who will conduct a full and complete external investigation of this matter.

"While we hope this is an isolated incident; we will not be able to draw any conclusions or make any assumptions until a full and complete audit of the Custodian's evidence has been completed. We have been in communication with District Attorney Ricky Babin concerning this case. As well, we will report any findings to him upon completion of the audit and the internal affairs investigation.
