Update on Aggressive Litter Abatement - Friday, May 14, 2010

With the onset of spring and grass cutting along State Highways, the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office is making an aggressive attack on the littering problem throughout the parish. On April 5, 2010, we dedicated a full time officer to supervise trustees (inmate labor) for litter abatement throughout the parish. We will first concentrate on the State Highways and then move into problems areas along parish roads and bridges later. For the Month of April we have bagged 1,179 bags of litter and as of May 13, we have bagged 397 bags of litter. "While we are faced with declining revenues, I would certainly like to spend budgeted resources in other areas. However, I am a firm believer that a cleaner parish will be a safer parish if we all work together to combat the blighted housing and litter problem.

With respect to enforcement, I have given an order to my deputies to no longer issue a summons when a subject is being cited for littering. They will now place that person under arrest and will have to be booked in the Assumption Parish Detention Center. There name will be made a part of arrest log and published in the local papers.

We would like to invite the general public's comments and solicit your help with this task. If you notice a certain problem area in your neighborhood, please feel free to call (985) 369-7283 and leave a message and location of a litter spot with Deputy Leroy Rodrigue, or you can email dcrochet@assumptionsheriff.com with information or feel free to call me at 985-369-7281.
