Hiring of Evidence Custodian - Wednesday, May 26, 2010
Sheriff Mike Waguespack reports the hiring of a retired Executive Officer with Louisiana State Police. Thane Matis, a retired Louisiana State Police Lieutenant with 28 years of law enforcement experience has joined the ranks of the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office. Thane Matis will be the lead evidence custodian and has begun the process of assisting me with re-organizing the property and evidence operations of this office. Mr. Matis brings a wealth of knowledge to the job and is an experienced evidence custodian which was one of his assignments while serving as an executive officer at Troop C in Gray, Louisiana. Thane graduated from the State Police Training Academy in 1979 has been through thousands of hours of advanced training and received numerous certifications while serving in various capacities as a Louisiana State Trooper. During 2003, he was awarded the "Professional Excellence Award” by his peers. Before entering the law enforcement field, he served his country as a U.S. Marine and obtained the rank of Sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge. "Thane is a disciplined law enforcement professional who has the work ethic, integrity and respect to assist me with re-establishing the credibility of this office with our partners in the criminal justice system. He will assist me in the development and implementation of the most modern procedures that will be used to ensure that the evidence is handled in a secure and efficient manner with additional safeguards in place.”

I have initially tasked Thane Matis with the immediate implementation of developing, writing and implementing revised property and evidence policies and procedures, the installation of recently purchased property and evidence software and bar coding system, conversion and entering of all evidence data into this new database/tracking system, and the disposal of property and evidence no longer needed in accordance with Louisiana Law. Once the system is in place, he will continue to maintain functions of receiving, logging and preservation of evidence and will handle all submittals of evidence to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis and testing.
