Belle Rose- On Tuesday, December 28th, 2010, at approximately 9:05p.m., The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office received a call in reference to a single vehicle crash on LA 70(South) west of Joe Dugas Road in Belle Rose. This area of highway 70 is a curved location of the highway and is known as Dugas' Curve where frequent accidents occur.
Upon Deputies arrival, it was learned that Barrie Hebert (W/F, 42 of Gonzales, LA) was operating a 2006 Nissan Maxima westbound on LA 70. Hebert failed to negotiate a left banked curve and ran off of the roadway to the right of the roadway laned for travel. Hebert's vehicle became partially submerged in a deep drainage ditch beyond the westbound shoulder. The driver of the vehicle made a verbal request for Kerek's Towing of Sorrento, LA to recover her vehicle.
While the vehicle was being removed, Hebert asked deputies on scene for her cellular phone and she was advised by a deputy and the tow truck operator that the phone was possibly in the vehicle and that once the vehicle was loaded onto the bed of the wrecker, she would be able to retrieve it. Deputies stated that Hebert entered the ditch without their or the tow truck operator's knowledge, in an attempt to enter her vehicle. Hebert was dressed in dark clothing and the wrecked vehicle was in a substandard lit area. Hebert entered the ditch while the vehicle was in the process of being towed from the ditch by the wrecker and she was struck by her own vehicle. Hebert's vehicle passed over her as she was under the vehicle.
Hebert received severe injuries and was transported to Baton Rouge area Hospital via Acadian Ambulance's Air Med Service where she remains in critical condition. The use of alcohol and/or drug involvement is unknown but a blood sample was taken and the results are pending from the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory.
The driver of the tow truck was transported to the Assumption Parish Detention Center where he submitted a negative sample on the Intoxilyzer 5000, which tests the amount of alcohol in a person's blood.
At this time, no charges have been filed in connection with the vehicle crash and deputies are continuing their investigation.
