On January 1, 2011 at approximately 11:30 a.m., an Assumption Parish Undercover Agent received information in reference to cockfighting taking place near Faith Street in Bayou L'Ourse. The agent entered a wooded area which bordered the property where the alleged cockfighting was taking place and did confirm the illegal activity was in progress. Patrol deputies were notified and dispatched to the area. As deputies arrived on scene they observed a large number of people were in the back yard of a residence at 118 Faith Street. As deputies entered the yard they observed blood in two areas on the ground, a 55 gallon drum containing 5 dead roosters and 3 wooden boxes with different colors of string on each containing metal spurs used to fight the roosters. A Hispanic male who was identified himself as Ismael Trevino Jr., age 36 of 125 Westside Park, Amelia, Louisiana was interviewed and he stated that the roosters were his and he was responsible for organizing the cockfighting activities.
Trevino was taken into custody by patrol deputies and charged with Cockfighting and Cruelty to Animals. He was booked in the Assumption Parish Detention Center and bond has not been set as of the time of this release.
This matter remains under investigation and further arrests or issuance of summons is expected as several other Hispanic Men have been identified as participating in the cockfighting activities.
