Two Injured in Belle River Boating Accident - Sunday, January 16, 2011

This morning we received a call at approximately 7:41am in reference to a boating accident. The accident took place in the Belle River waterway which borders Assumption and St. Martin Parish. Subjects stated that they were traveling in the Belle River waterway in a 15 foot aluminum skiff to go hunting when their motor (40 horsepower outboard) struck an underwater obstruction, believed to be a log. The motor of the vessel became dismounted from the transom and flew into the boat striking both operator and passenger before going overboard. The driver of the vessel, Derek Domingue (119 Leonie St - Pierre Part, LA 26yoa) sustained a crushed hand and the passenger, Kenneth Landry Jr (6928 LA 1 - Belle Rose, LA 37yoa) sustained a severe laceration to his ankle. After the victims did not make it to the point where there were supposed to meet the rest of their hunting party, another boat in the group went back to look for them. The victims and their boat were located on the bank. The victims were transported to the Spunky Monkey Boat Landing where emergency units from Pierre Part Fire and Rescue and Acadian Ambulance were waiting. Both subjects were ultimately transported to Teche Regional Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance Service. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was called to the scene and will be investigating the accident. St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office assisted with this response. The injuries sustained are not considered to be life threatening.
