On May 17, 2011, at around 10:30 a.m., the Assumption Parish 911 Center received a call advising of shots fired at Landry's Seafood Restaurant located at 3614 Highway 70 in Pierre Part. Caller stated that a male subject named Paul French shot Michelle. A preliminary investigation reveals that Paul French, age 51, of 114 Derrick Street, Lot B, Pierre Part entered the restaurant and had a verbal exchange with his ex-girlfriend. He then pulled a handgun and began firing at her. A patron who was seated and having lunch noticed the situation and immediately retrieved a concealed handgun and in defense of others began to exchange gun fire with Paul French. They both eventually exited the restaurant and continued shooting. The shooting victim an ex-girlfriend, Michelle Borer, age 42, of 134 Mary Ann Street, Lot A, in Pierre Part was found at the back door of the restaurant where she was pronounced dead. She appeared to have been shot multiple times. The Suspect, Paul French, was found in the side yard of the restaurant where he appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound from the Good Samaritan but appears to have died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. He was also pronounced dead at the scene. The bodies of both will be sent to the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and recovery of evidence. The Good Samaritan who was permitted by the State of Louisiana to carry a concealed weapon will not be identified at this time was shot in the abdomen and is being treated at a local hospital. He is in stable condition and his injuries are not life threatening. Other employees present in the restaurant at the time of the shooting fled to a nearby business and called 911.
Paul French was recently released from custody the Assumption Parish Detention Center after posting a $5,000 bond for a May 4, 2011 arrest for misdemeanor violations of a protective order which was in effect until October 5, 2012. Michelle Borer had been granted an order of protection by the 23rd Judicial Court which was filed on April 13, 2011. Paul French also has an Assumption Parish Drug Conviction after pleading guilty to possession of schedule II (Cocaine) on August 15, 2007 where he received a 5 year suspended sentence and paid all fines and costs.
