Traffic Stop Yields DWI Arrest and Cocaine - Tuesday, September 20, 2011

On September 19, 2011, Deputy Donnie Calamia, Jr. was patrolling Highway 1 near Sycamore Street in Labadieville when he initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle after he observed the vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed (64mph/45zone). The driver immediately exited the vehicle holding a 12 ounce Bud Lite Bottle in his hand. After the subject performed poorly on the field sobriety test, he began to resist, become combative with deputies and started running down Sycamore Street while shouting "he was not going to jail. Deputies had a brief struggle with the subject but eventually took him into custody. While performing an inventory of his vehicle, Deputy Calamia found a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine in the driver's side of the vehicle.

Desmond Smith, age 33, of 314 Pelican Street, Labadieville, was arrested and booked on the following charges: Speeding (64/45), Open Container, DWI First Offense, Possession of Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substances (Cocaine) (2nd offense), Battery on a Police Officer (2 counts) and Resisting an Officer. Bond has not been set as of the time of this release and he is being held at the Assumption Parish Detention Center.
