Belle Rose Man Dies After Fistic Encounter - Wednesday, July 25, 2012

At 1:00 a.m. Monday morning (July 23, 2012), Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Saint Peter Street in Paincourtville in reference to a male subject laying in a front yard of a residence not moving. The subject appeared to have been in an altercation. Upon arrival, deputies observed a white male, later identified as Brett Hebert (43 years of age, W/M from 6859 Highway 1, Belle Rose) lying in the yard unresponsive. Acadian Ambulance and Paincourtville Fire and Rescue had arrived on scene and began CPR on Hebert. Subsequently, paramedics were able to restart Hebert’s heart but he was not breathing on his own. He was then transported to Assumption Community Hospital and later transferred to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced deceased in Thibodaux around 10:00 p.m. last night after being taken off a ventilator.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Hebert and a black male subject from Paincourtville had a confrontation at a residence which began as a verbal argument and developed into a fistic encounter. Witnesses indicate that at one point Hebert was struck and fell to the ground. The witnesses then attempted to render assistance and called 911 for further help.

Hebert’s body is being sent by the Assumption Parish Coroner to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office today for a full and complete autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The black male subject has been identified and interviewed by Detectives. However, no arrests have been made at this time. This is an on-going investigation and we have advised District Attorney Ricky Babin of its preliminary findings. As we a wait the results of the autopsy and conduct further interviews of witnesses, we ask the public to contact Detective Sergeant Jason Terry at 985-526-1627 or 985-369-2912 with any information you may have concerning this case.
