BURGLARY SUSPECTS ARRESTED - Friday, April 25, 2014

Sheriff Mike Waguespack reports that on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at approximately 11:45pm, the Assumption Parish Sheriffs Office received a loud noise complaint in the area of East Avenue in Napoleonville. The responding deputies located a safe with broken concrete around it that appeared to have been beaten on in an attempt to gain entry inside. Next to the safe were numerous tools and a rolling cart, which was apparently used to attempt entry inside the safe and transport the safe.

After checking businesses in the area for signs of a burglary, it was determined that a local meat market in the town of Napoleonville, had been broken into. Deputies observed that the door had been pried open and it appeared as though items were thrown on the floor inside. The deputy secured the scene and the owners were contacted. Upon arrival, the owners advised that their safe was missing. It was also learned that the tools and rolling cart were also from inside the building. They also identified several items outside the back door that were taken from inside the business as well.

Through investigation, suspects were identified based on information provided by witnesses that came forward. Warrants were obtained for the suspects based on witness accounts and physical evidence obtained. One of the suspects confessed to the burglary. Three suspects were arrested, all for violation of LA RS 14:62 Simple Burglary and LA RS 14:56 Simple Criminal Damage to Property over $500. The suspects are identified as Darrein Stewart (B/M, 19yoa, 4150 72d Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA), Byron Kelly (B/M, 19yoa, 182 Hwy 401, Napoleonville, LA), and a 16 year old juvenile from Gonzales, LA. Their bonds have been set at $25,000 by the 23rd Judicial District Court and they are still in custody as of the time of this release.

This is an on-going investigation and more arrests are possible. Detective Sergeant Donald Calamia is the lead investigator. If you have any information concerning this case or others, please contact the Criminal Investigative Division at 985-526-1627 or Communications Division at 985-369-2912.
