PIERRE PART --- Sheriff Mike Waguespack
reports that on Thursday, March 12th, 2015 at approximately 12:15am,
during a routine business check on Lee Drive, Deputy Kelli Matherne noticed a
light shining out of the bayou. She then
went over and determined the light was coming from a vehicle underwater and
heard sounds coming from a person inside.
She proceeded to immediately jump into the bayou and attempt to break
the windows. Another deputy arrived and
assisted her breaking open the windshield and were able to get the driver out
before he drowned. The driver who was
the sole occupant was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Assumption Community
Hospital where he was treated and blood was drawn. Deputy Matherne was treated at Assumption
Community Hospital for cuts she suffered while breaking the glass. Deputy Matherne is a patrol deputy who has
been with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office for just under 2 years. We would like to commend Deputy Matherne for
her quick thinking and heroic actions that ultimately saved the drivers life.
is an on-going investigation and charges may be forthcoming based upon the
results of a routine toxicology test.
