Four Assumption Parish K-9s now have bulletproof vests that could save their
lives. Diesel, Isa, Major, Vickie
received the vests from Canine Wounded Heroes, a nonprofit that provides vests
to police dogs across the country.
The department applied for the vests in March and
heard back a few days later. Each dog
was sized for its made-to-order vest, and after months of waiting the vests
recently arrived. The vests usually cost
approximately $2,000 each, but Canine Wounded Heroes, through a partnership
with K9 Tactical Gear, can buy them at a considerable savings.
These are not only bulletproof, but they're
stab-resistant. A dog is worth ... he's priceless. He's worth tens of thousands
of dollars. When you put this vest on him, he's safe. It does cover all the vital organs and it has
a little bit of protection on the front shoulders and under the belly.
The K-9s won’t wear
the vests all the time because they might cause the dogs to overheat, but they
will wear them anytime they go into a potentially dangerous situation. If we have the opportunity, the vest is going
to be on the dog any time they roll into something.
