Virtual Kidnapping Phone Scam - Wednesday, June 21, 2017

DATE:                WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2017
TO:                      ALL MEDIA OUTLETS
FROM:                SHERIFF LELAND FALCON
SUBJECT:          VIRTUAL KIDNAPPING PHONE SCAM

Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon is cautioning residents of a phone scam that has affected numerous people in area parishes.

The Sheriff says that virtual kidnapping is a phone scam where the caller tries to convince the victim that a loved one has been kidnapped and will be harmed unless a ransom is paid.

The scam is nationwide and in many cases children can be heard crying and asking for help.

In a Virginia case, a mother was called and told her daughter had been kidnapped, then wired the scammers $10,000.

The FBI is also investigating.

If you receive one of these calls contact your local Sheriff’s Office at (985) 369-2912 and do not send any money.
