ATTEMPED MURDER OF LOCAL DISTRICT ATTORNEY AND HIS WIFE IN BELLE ROSE - Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Yesterday around 7:53 pm, Assumption Parish 911 Communications Center received a call from a female caller advising that a male subject with a double barreled shotgun was in the cane field behind their house where she and her husband were ordered to stop. The couple immediately began to run away and the subject chased them for a distance firing one round at them as they ran down a headland road of the cane field. After firing the round, the suspect continued to chase the female victim and she was able to get away after he lunged for her and he fell in the middle of a block of cane. The Husband and Wife victims were finishing a late afternoon jog on family property when they were approached by this male subject. The male victim is a local Assistant District Attorney with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office and his wife is a local attorney as well. The couple resides in the Belle Rose Community. The Victims were able to give a detailed description of the subject to the Sheriff and responding deputies who then initiated a manhunt for him. A large section of the sugar cane field was surrounded in an area just south of highway 998 (AKA Belle Rose Lane) by responding deputies. An Assumption Parish K-9 unit was called in and began a track in the area where the subject was last seen. Louisiana State Police was contacted and Troop C sent additional manpower and LSP Headquarters sent in Air Support with a Helicopter equipped with infrared sensors to assist with the manhunt. Other deputies, troopers and detectives began an intense canvassing of the neighborhood along Belle Rose Lane and eventually made contact with the subject as he jumped out of a window of a mobile home that was about to be searched on Belle Rose Lane. After a short foot chase and resistance while still armed with the shotgun, Assumption Parish Deputies and Louisiana State Troopers were able to safely take him into custody around 11:30 pm.

The subject arrested is Brandon M. Landry, 28 years of age (2-14-1980) whose last known address is 114 Highway 998 (Belle Rose Lane) of Belle Rose, Louisiana. He is being booked with 2 counts of Attempted First Degree Murder, 1 count of Possession of Firearm by a Person Convicted of Certain Felonies, 1 count of Illegal Use of Weapons, 1 count of Criminal Trespassing, 1 count of Unauthorized Entry of an Inhabited Dwelling, and 1 count of Possession of an Illegal Firearm (Shotgun having a Barrel of less than Eighteen Inches).

As of this press release, Bond has not been set and he is being held in the Assumption Parish Detention Center.
