The primary responsibility of the Communications Dispatcher is to obtain all pertinent information from the caller and enter it into the computer system in an accurate and efficient manner so that the proper agency may respond to the caller’s needs. Duties include the prompt, careful, and courteous answering of calls, dispatching on all radio frequencies, and simulcasting priority calls to insure that any deputies in the immediate vicinity of the call will have all of the relative information to respond. Dispatchers must also patch channels with agencies, including Louisiana State Police and provide support for Swat rolls, LASER responses, and other special operations. Additionally, all radio transmissions must be entered immediately into the computer-aided dispatch system.

Requirements:

Qualitifactions

  • Graduate from an accredited senior high school or GED equivalent.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be a US citizen and be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to work rotating shift assignments.

Special Requirements

  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of APSO, as well as the geography of Assumption Parish.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Effectively cope with stressful situations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate proper dispatch codes and signals.
  • Must be able to recall and communicate details.

Miscellaneous Information

  • Physical Requirements: Requires the physical dexterity needed to type in a proficient manner.
  • Ability to sit for an extended period of time.
  • Must have clear vision.
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
  • Must be able to enter information into the computer system while answering calls and dispatching.
