FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY TIP – SHERIFF LELAND FALCON

NAPOLEONVILLE – As the holiday weekend is upon us, many resident’s and non-resident’s will take to the waterways to celebrate.

We ask everyone to practice safe boating and water rules.

Please be sure that you have adequate and certified life preservers, fire extinguishers, life and throw rings. Children should be utilizing their life preservers.

It will be extremely warm weather this weekend with heat indexes predicted to reach near 108 degrees. You should have sufficient water, food, and sunscreen.

Boating operators should refrain from utilizing alcohol and passengers should use alcohol in moderation, as alcohol tends to cause dehydration during extreme heat.

If you use fireworks, please utilize safety and please do not allow children to use fireworks while unattended.

****Lastly but very important – over the past few days, the Southeastern United States has experienced a number of alligator / human encounters resulting in injuries and death. Food sources are limited for the alligator population, and the alligator population is higher today than ever.****

Please know your surroundings as you enter the water for swimming purposes. Alligators tend to troll at the surface of the water and are sometimes hard to see. Please take note that alligator attacks are increasing and, in most cases, alligator / human encounters are generally fatal.
