Public Service Message:
To begin, we want the reading public to know what our policy is concerning the publication of inmate photographs on both our Facebook page and the Sheriff’s Office website. Since Sheriff Falcon assumed office in 2016, any person arrested for a felony has had their name as well as a press release concerning that arrest published on those venues as well as being distributed to media outlets. We have been 100% consistent with that policy. The public has a right to know when and for what someone is arrested for and that is public record. For sometime now, arrests dating back several years have been mysteriously reappearing on public Facebook pages. First and foremost, the Sheriff’s Office NEVER re-publishes old and outdated arrests. We have been in contact with Facebook as well as our neighboring law enforcement partners and have determined that the re-publications are actually a result of persons sharing those old posts. This is unfortunate and unacceptable in the media world and the society we live in.
In the last week, several of those old posts have re-appeared by being shared. A young lady who was victimized by this cruel activity contacted the person who shared her photo, not once but twice and instead of taking responsibility for his actions, he blatantly lied and published a statement on his page blaming the Sheriff’s Office. This individual is self proclaimed journalist Morgan Landry. This is not the work of a journalist, but rather the doings of a vindictive, mean spirited individual. This young lady made a mistake in 2018. She answered to her charges and suffered the consequences. She nor anyone else should ever have to relive that dark period of their lives after they worked so hard to do the right thing and did so successfully.
Again, the public has a right to know and we respect that and we always try to be as transparent as possible without jeopardizing a criminal case. But no person should ever be victimized by the childish pranks of an individual who claims to be a journalist.
We ask everyone to understand that while there is no law against an individual sharing a particular item on Facebook, there is no legitimate rhyme or reason to engage in the reposting of an arrest that is seven years old.
In closing, we ask everyone to consider the damage they inflict upon persons and families when you participate in such activity and we humbly implore upon Mr. Morgan Landry to act like the journalist he claims to be.
Our Public Information Commander attempted to reach out to Mr. Landry by phone and through private messaging to each of his numerous Facebook pages to discuss this matter but he has failed to respond thus prompting this public statement.
