SHERIFF PREPARING SANDBAGS FOR POSSIBLE HIGH-WATER EVENT
NAPOLEONVILLE – In conjunction with the Assumption Parish Police Jury and the Office of Emergency Preparedness, Sheriff Leland Falcon has begun the process of preparing sandbags in the event they are needed to fend off rising water. This is a pro-active measure as the Atchafalaya River has already started to rise due to copious amounts of rainfall in the North and Mid-Central United States.
On Monday, April 14, 2025, the St. Mary Levee District will be closing the Bayou Chene water structure in anticipation of the rising Atchafalaya River.
Sheriff Falcon stated, “While there is no imminent threat, we do know that water levels will increase, and we simply want to be prepared if sandbags are needed. Additionally, this will be the first real test of the Bayou Chene system”.
Correctional center inmates are currently bagging sand at the detention facility using machines purchased by Sheriff Falcon.
If and when a threat develops, we will advise the public as to where sandbags will be distributed.
