FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(UPDATE):
Shortly after 2:00 a.m., the deceased body of the subject was located in the area of Bayou Lafourche not far from the area he was last seen. Chief Zeringue would like to thank all assisting agencies for their assistance and resources in this incident. With collaboration from the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, a more detailed press release will follow at a later time in reference to both the initial incident in Assumption Parish, as well as the recovery of the body in the City Limits of Thibodaux. Identity of the deceased is also being withheld at this time.
(ORIGINAL POST):
Thibodaux Police Chief Bryan Zeringue advised Thibodaux Police Officers, Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Deputies and multiple other neighboring Law Enforcement / Fire Agencies are currently on scene on the Jackson Street bridge, where a subject leaped into the water following a pursuit between the subject and the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Thus far, only very little information can be released due to being in the infant stages of the investigation. What is known at this time is the unknown subject/driver fled from the vehicle while it was still moving on the Jackson Street bridge and leaped over the railing of the bridge into the water. The subject did surface at some point but appeared that he was having difficulty staying above water. As officers entered the water in attempt to render aid, the subject was unable to be located.
The search remains and the incident remains under investigation. The public will be updated accordingly. Chief Zeringue asks the public to please avoid the area during this time. The bridge remains closed and a large amount of police and fire presence is expected in this area for an undetermined amount of time.
