TRAFFIC – DRUG – GUN LAW VIOLATIONS
KATELYN MARIE BENOIT, DEMONE CORTEZ RICHARD
LABADIEVILLE – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrests of Katelyn Marie Benoit, 29, of 2524 Highway 1, Labadieville, LA and Demone Cortez Richard, 33, of 104 Grisaffe Lane, Belle Rose, LA on felony drug and gun law violations arising from a traffic stop late Thursday evening on LA 1 near Labadieville, LA.
A uniformed patrol deputy observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation and initiated a stop of that vehicle. The deputy made contact with the driver, now identified as Katelyn Marie Benoit. The deputy conducted an officer / violator interview. Benoit’s drivers license was suspended. The deputy noted an odor of suspected marijuana emitting from the vehicle.
The deputy made contact with the passenger, now, identified as Demone Cortez Richard and decided that additional investigation was warranted. The deputy conducted a walk-around of the vehicle and observed a handgun on the front floorboard of the vehicle.
The deputy requested a K-9 unit at his location. The K-9 conducted and open-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted positive to the presence of controlled dangerous substances. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a firearm as well as a quantity of suspected MDMA (Ecstasy).
Both Katelyn Marie Benoit and Demone Cortez Richard were arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center as follows:
– As to Katelyn Marie Benoit:
*Possession of MDMA (Ecstasy)
*Illegal Carry of Weapons in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
*Driving Under a Suspended Driver’s License
*Proper Equipment Required on Vehicles
– As to Demone Cortez Richard:
*Possession of MDMA (Ecstasy)
*Illegal Carrying of Weapons in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
Both Katelyn Marie Benoit and Demone Cortez Richard remain incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
