TRAFFIC INCIDENT, DRUG – GUN LAW VIOLATIONS

AMELIA – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrest of Corey Dashawn Givens, 21, of 700 Fourth Street, Morgan City, LA, on felony drug and gun law violations arising from a Sunday traffic stop near Amelia.
A uniformed patrol deputy observed an eastbound vehicle commit a traffic violation and initiated a stop of the same. The deputy made contact with the driver, now identified as Corey Dashawn Givens. The deputy conducted an officer / driver interview. The deputy noted a strong odor of suspected marijuana emitting from the vehicle. At the conclusion of the interview, the deputy decided that further investigation was warranted.
A K-9 unit was summoned to the location and conducted an open-air sniff of the suspect vehicle. The K-9 alerted positive for the presence of controlled dangerous substances.
A search of the vehicle was conducted and during that process, a quantity of suspected marijuana and derivatives was seized. A large caliber handgun was also seized.
Corey Dashawn Givens was arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of:
*Speeding, 100 mph / 70 mph
*Prohibited Acts Schedule 1 to Wit: Marijuana, Marijuana Derivatives
*Illegal Carrying of Weapons in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
*Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Corey Dashawn Givens remains incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
