TRAFFIC INCIDENT – PURSUIT – DRUG / GUN LAW VIOLATIONS – RESMOND SMITH, JR.
PLATTENVILLE – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrest of Resmond Smith, Jr., 20, of 315 Pelican Street, Labadieville, LA, on felony drug and gun law violations arising from a traffic incident on LA 308 near Spur 70 late Friday.
A uniformed patrol deputy observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation and initiated a stop of that vehicle. The suspect driver engaged the deputy into a pursuit situation. The pursuit continued onto LA 1 at which time the suspect allegedly threw illegal drugs out of the passenger window as the pursuit continued. The deputy terminated the pursuit on Jones Street at which time the suspect exited the vehicle. The deputy noted suspected marijuana clippings on the suspects clothing. The suspect was arrested. The deputy conducted a protective walk-around of the suspect vehicle and observed a large caliber handgun and additional marijuana in plain view.
The deputy summoned a K-9 to the scene at which time the K-9 conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle. The K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal drugs. During a subsequent search additional marijuana was seized.
Resmond Smith, Jr. was booked int the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of
*Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute
*Illegal Possession of a Firearm in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
*Aggravated Flight from an Officer
*Obstruction of Justice
*Driving Under Suspension
*Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
*Speeding
*Insurance Required
Resmond Smith posted a $50,000 commercial bond and was released.
