TRAFFIC STOP – DRUG LAW VIOLATIONS

LABADIEVILLE– Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrest of Kyren James Smith, 25, of 115 Fertitta Lane, Napoleonville, LA, on felony drug law violations following a Saturday morning traffic stop near Labadieville, LA.
A uniformed patrol deputy observed a vehicle with an equipment violation near LA 1 and LA 398 and initiated a stop of that vehicle. The deputy made contact with the driver, now identified as Kyren James Smith. The deputy conducted an officer / violator interview. During that process, the deputy noted a pungent odor of suspected marijuana emitting from the vehicle.
The deputy concluded that additional investigation was warranted. The deputy utilized a K-9 to conduct an open-air sniff of the vehicle and the K-9 alerted positive to the presence of illegal narcotics. A subsequent search of the suspect vehicle yielded a quantity of suspected marijuana and a large caliber handgun.
Kyren James Smith was arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of:
*Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute
*Illegal Possession of a Firearm in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
*Illegal Window Tint
*No Drivers License
*Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
*Turning Movements and Signals Required
Kyren James Smith remains incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
